The No. 4 University of Minnesota earned a 3-1 win over North Carolina, tonight, at the Target Center. In the last match of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Golden Gophers rallied from a 19-22 deficit in the fourth set to win, 25-23, and take the match. Minnesota had 17 blocks and hit .240 as a team, while UNC had 10.5 blocks, had 62 digs and hit .164. With the win, the Gophers start the season 2-0, while the Tar Heels drop to 0-2.

Stephanie Samedy paved the way for the Golden Gophers when she had 20 kills in 42 swings to hit .333. Regan Pittman added a career-best 17 kills, hit .500 and added six blocks. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 46 assists and contributed 10 digs for her second-straight double-double. CC McGraw had a team-best 16 digs. In all, Minnesota had 12 individuals see action in the win. Paulina Swider made her collegiate debut and contributed two block assists.

Minnesota returns home to Maturi Pavilion next weekend when it hosts the annual Diet Coke Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Golden Gophers welcome North Dakota State, Georgia Southern and Arkansas. Two matches will be held on Friday, while four take place on Saturday.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers utilized an early start to take the first set, 25-16. Minnesota jumped out to an 8-2 lead as North Carolina was forced to use its first timeout of the set. The Gophers opened with a 4-1 lead after Samedy and Taylor Morgan combined for a block. After North Carolina called a timeout, the Heels went on a small run and cut the deficit to two at 6-8, but the Gophers got a sideout on a Samedy kill. Minnesota built up a lead again at 15-7 when North Carolina used its second timeout of the set. Minnesota pushed the score to 20-13 on a Martin kill, while the Gophers added its 22nd point off a Samedy kill. Minnesota finished off the set with a block for a 25-16 first set win.

Set 2: Trailing 23-20, Minnesota came back to win the set, 26-24. North Carolina took a 7-3 lead, but the Gophers battled back and tied the set at 11-11 off a Seliger-Swenson kill from Hart. As the two teams traded points, the Gophers took a 15-13 lead off back-to-back kills from Pittman. UNC went on a small run and took a 17-16 lead and later a 19-17 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota came out of the break and tied up the set at 19 on a Morgan kill and a Morgan/Martin block as North Carolina called a timeout. UNC, however, went on a 3-0 run to take a 23-20 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota cut the deficit to one at 23-22 and 24-23 as UNC called a timeout. Minnesota tied up the set at 24 off a block from Swider and Hart and took the lead at 25-24 with a kill from Pittman. The Gophers finished off the set with another Pittman kill from Sara Nielsen to come back and win the set, 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead.

Set 3: The two teams went through seven tie scores as UNC came from behind and won the third, 30-28. After a 5-4 lead, Minnesota held a 10-6 lead off a UNC attack error. The Gophers pushed the lead to 14-8 on three-straight kills from Samedy. Pittman later pushed the score to 17-12 as UNC called a timeout. UNC cut the lead to three, but the Gophers had kills from Pittman and Morgan to go back up, 19-15. Claire Sheehan and Morgan combined for a block to get the Gophers to 20-16. UNC battled back and tied up the set at 20-20 off a block and took the lead at 21-20 off a kill. Minnesota called a timeout as UNC led 21-20 and again at 23-20. The Gophers came back and cut it to two as UNC called a timeout at 24-22. In a double sub, Swider came in for the second time of the match and contributed a big block, while Nielsen added an ace to tie it up at 24. UNC pushed it to set point, but Pittman tied it up with a kill at 24. The two teams tied it up four more times at 27, with the Gophers having three match points. However, UNC responded each time and took the set, 30-28 with a kill and an ace off the tape to push the match to four sets.

Set 4: Trailing 19-22, the Golden Gophers stormed back to win the set, 25-23. In the final run, the Gophers had five kills from Samedy, while Lauren Barnes added an ace to solidify the win. Minnesota fell behind, 9-6, and burned its first timeout of the set. With UNC up, 18-13, the Gophers called their second timeout of the set. Minnesota responded and went on a 4-1 run to cut UNC's lead to two at 19-17. North Carolina called a timeout and came out of the break with a sideout. The Gophers tied up the set at 22 and took the lead at 23-22 when Samedy added three-straight kills. North Carolina called its second timeout of the set after the Gopher lead. However, out of the timeout, Barnes delivered an ace for match point. After UNC came within one at 24-23, the Gophers closed out the match with another kill from Samedy to win the match, 3-1.
