2018 Women's Cross Country Intrasquad top-20

Gophers Open Season with Intrasquad 5K

8/31/2018 7:52:00 PM | Women's Cross Country

Megan Hasz, Bethany Hasz, and Olivia Hummel took the top three spots at the team's unofficial season-opener Friday night.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Megan Hasz, Bethany Hasz, and Olivia Hummel were the top three finishers when the No. 24 University of Minnesota women's cross country team hosted its annual Intrasquad 5K at Les Bolstad Cross Country Course on Friday night. Thirty Gophers took part in the team's unofficial season-opening race.

Megan Hasz won in 18:32.2 with Bethany Hasz on her heels in 18:33.2 as runner-up. Hummel finished third in 18:58.3 with Abby Kohut-Jackson (19:11.6) and Patty O'Brien (19:16.5) rounding out the top five finishers.

"I thought the efforts today were awesome," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "We had some kind of predictable outcomes with Bethany and Megan doing well up front and really having a good controlled effort, but I was super proud of that next group. Olivia Hummel was our number three today; she has made some big jumps. Abby KJ came back where she left off, which I thought was awesome.

"Some good running to par, but also some really good surprises from some young kids who I think are ready to make some jumps, so I'm super pumped about the day. ... The efforts were really good, working together was really good, and it was a good 'Point A' for the season. What I tell them all the time is that we're at Point A now, and the goal is to be at Point Z by nationals. We don't have to skip any steps. We just have to go one phase at a time, and I'm really, really happy with the starting point."

The Maroon Team won with 30 points, followed by the Gold Team with 38 points for second place. The Black Team finished third with 58 points.

The Gophers officially kick off the 2018 season by hosting the Oz Memorial 6K next Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. CT at Les Bolstad Course.
