Gophers Defeat Green Bay in Straight Sets

The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated Green Bay in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-22). After tonight's win, the Golden Gophers improve to 6-2, while the Phoenix drops to 5-6.

Alexis Hart led the way with 13 kills while hitting .440, Regan Pittman followed with nine and Stephanie Samedy had seven. Samantha Seliger-Swenson put up 33 assists, eight digs and two service aces. CC McGraw had a team-best 16 digs in the sweep. Paulina Swider set a new career high with four blocks, including one solo. The Maroon and Gold hit .248 on the night with 44 kills, 61 digs and eight blocks. The Phoenix were held to a .119 hitting percentage with only 33 kills, 56 digs and six blocks.

Green Bay plays Kansas State on Friday night at the Maturi Pavilion. Match time is 7 p.m. and free to the public. The Gophers are back in action Saturday when they take on Kansas State at 7:30 p.m.

 

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers opened the match with a 25-18 set win. Minnesota opened with a 12-7 lead as the Phoenix called a timeout. The Gophers, however, pushed the lead to 15-8 off a block from Morgan and Seliger-Swenson as Green Bay called a second timeout. Minnesota later pushed the lead to 18-11 off a Morgan kill and a double-digit lead (21-11) with a Rollins kill. Minnesota closed out the set with back-to-back kills from Hart to go up, 1-0.

Set 2: Minnesota hit .324 en route to a 25-15 second set win. The Gophers took an 8-5 lead off a Jasmyn Martin kill. The Gophers pushed the lead to 14-10 off a Hart kill as Green Bay called a timeout. Minnesota, however, added on the pressure and took an 18-11 lead as the Phoenix took its second timeout of the set. Minnesota later went up 20-13 on a Seliger-Swenson kill and 22-13 off a Martin kill. Martin added another kill for set point, while a Green Bay attack error gave the Gophers a 2-0 lead.

Set 3: The two teams went through eight tie scores and five lead changes, but Minnesota closed out the sweep with a 25-22 set win. Minnesota fell behind 1-5 in the third, but battled back to tie the set at 10-10. During a six-point serve rotation by Pittman, the Gophers went up, 14-10. The two teams, however, tied though the 22-22 point. Minnesota however, had a kill from Hart, an Green Bay attack error for set point and closed out the match with a solo block from Swider to win the match, 3-0.
