MINNEAPOLIS – Despite outshooting Illinois 10-8, Minnesota soccer opened up Big Ten play Friday evening falling to the Illini, 2-0. Illinois first put a tally in the scoring column in the 13th minute. A corner kick played right to the middle of the box where Illinois' Arianna Veland headed one to the back of the net.
Minnesota had opportunities early garnering three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of play. Minnesota could not produce their first shot until the 14th minute as Bockin sent a rocket to the diving Illini goalkeeper.
Trying to find their stride in the second half the Gophers came out firing with an early shot on goal by Bockin to result in a corner kick.
Following the corner kick, Illinois went to work on the counter attack producing a corner kick. In the 54th minute it was another set piece that got the best of the Gophers as Veland headed in her second goal of the night.
The Gophers continued to produce offensive chances. Marisa Windingstad and Bockin both took shots in the final 16 minutes of play but to no avail.
Minnesota looks to rebound on Sunday, Sept. 16 as they host No. 12 Northwestern to close out the opening weekend of conference play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
