LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Minnesota men's cross country program picked up a team win for the second-straight weekend on Saturday morning as the Maroon & Gold captured the championship at Nebraska's Greeno/Dirksen Invite. In addition to the team win, redshirt sophomore Alec Basten picked up his first collegiate title at the eight-kilometer race.
Following Minnesota's win last Friday at the Oz Memorial, the Gophers totaled 33 points to lead the nine-team field on Saturday at Nebraska's Mahoney Golf Course. Iowa came in second at 68 points while Nebraska finished third with 71 points. All three teams will be back at the course next month for the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
"It's great to get another win heading into the Griak later this month," Minnesota head cross country coach Steve Plasencia said. "Alec Basten ran a composed race – a really good race. A time like that on a day like today is a terrific effort, and it was great to see him get rewarded."
Making his season debut for the University of Minnesota, Basten recorded a personal record for the second-straight race, clocking a 24:17.5 across the eight-kilometer course for his first career individual crown. The redshirt sophomore ended the 2017 season with a personal 10-kilometer record at the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional.
Including Basten's title, the Maroon & Gold put four scorers in the top 10 with Evan Ferlic finishing fifth at 25:03.2, Seth Eliason coming in seventh at 25:12.6 in his first competition with Minnesota and Hunter Lucas running a personal eight-kilometer record of 25:16.3 to finish ninth. Nick Rink closed out the Gophers' scoring in 11th at 25:32.2.
Also competing for the Gophers were Shane Streich (15th, 25:35.2, personal record), Robert Wagner (23rd, 25:47.6), Hamza Ali (26:11.0) and Hunter Staack (26:39.2).
The Maroon & Gold will take a week away from competition before hosting the 33rd annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
