MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota and Gopher Athletics celebrated a new era of track and field on Monday with the grand opening of the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium.

"Today is the day an idea becomes reality. Plans on paper have transformed into a world-class track and field stadium as we celebrate our past and look ahead to the incredibly bright future of our program," Director of Athletics Mark Coyle said. "As a department, we have one of the most successful, broad-based programs in the country, and we understand sustaining and building on that success requires investment to ensure we are providing an outstanding experience for our current and future student-athletes. We appreciate the support so many of you have shown to make that possible."

The University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium will give the Golden Gopher program its first opportunities in more than 15 years to host home meets, including Big Ten and NCAA competition. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, this facility will become synonymous with track & field excellence in the Midwest. It will not only provide a first-class experience for the young men and women who compete for Minnesota, it will also provide a wonderful venue for the state's largest amateur meets and a Minnesota option for USA Track and Field to place its marquee events in the  Upper Midwest.

"This facility represents a new beginning for Minnesota track and field," Minnesota Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Matt Bingle said. "This is our new home, and this is where our family will be for a long time."

Facility Features
*A nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface - A state-of-the-art surface set with nine lanes and three chutes, providing the flexibility to host major competitions at all levels.

*Full-field event hosting capabilities - Amenities and space will be available to host all field events on-site. This facility will be capable of hosting all events for a complete track and field competition in one place.

*Versatile configuration - The facility's layout will provide opportunities to run sprints on both the front and backstretches, as well as opportunities to change directions for long jump, triple jump, pole vault and other events to work with the prevailing winds on competition days.

*Fully enclosed, heated warm-up and cool down areas: Private spaces beneath the grandstands will provide competitors areas to warm up prior to competing and cool down following their events.

*Grandstands with capacity to host major competitions: A combination of 2,400 permanent bleacher seats and event-based seating will create enough available seats to host many of the state's and nations' largest meets.
