MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track & field program welcomes back one of its own as Ibrahim Kabia returns to the 'U' as an assistant coach, Minnesota Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Matt Bingle announced on Tuesday.

"I am excited to announce that we have hired Coach Kabia," Bingle said. "This is a great day for our team and the University of Minnesota. He will make this program better and make each student-athlete better both on and off the track. I could not be more excited to have him back with the program. As an alum and a Big Ten champion in the 100-meter dash, he brings so much knowledge to our athletes in so many ways."

A native of Sierra Leone, Kabia returns to the University of Minnesota after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa. With the Panthers, Kabia coached the men's program to the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Prior to joining the Northern Iowa coaching staff, Kabia served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Gophers from 2014-16 and helped guide the women's team to a share of the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Kabia began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Orono High School.

"I am extremely excited and honored to be coming back to the 'U', a place and program that I'm very familiar with. I would like to thank Matt Bingle for the opportunity to join the staff at Minnesota, and I would also like to thank Dave Paulsen and the University of Northern Iowa for giving me a chance. I had an amazing experience in my two years with the Panthers," Kabia said. "There is a lot of excitement with Gopher athletics, especially the track & field program, and I am excited to be a part of it. I look forward to contributing to the success that the program has enjoyed over the years."

On the track, Kabia still holds University of Minneosta school records in the 60-meter dash (6.63) and the 100-meter dash (10.29). A two-year captain for the Maroon & Gold, Kabia was the 2008 Big Ten champion in the 100-meter dash and a First Team All-American in the 60-meter dash in 2007. Following his collegiate career, he set the Sierra Leone national record in the 60-meter dash (6.65) as a finalist at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Kabia earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota in 2009 before adding a masters of education in sport management in 2016.
