Gophers Top Maryland in Straight Sets

The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated the University of Maryland in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) in front of 5,444 fans tonight. With the win, the Gophers improve to 8-2Â overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten while Maryland drops to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Stephanie Samedy led the team with 13 kills, while hitting .310. She was followed by Adanna Rollins, who posted her second double-double of the week with 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Alexis Hart and Taylor Morgan each contributed nine kills. Samantha Seliger-Swenson put up 31 assists and Sara Nielsen set a career-high with six assists. In the back row, CC McGraw had 14 digs and Lauren Barnes had eight. Regan Pittman led the team with five blocks including one solo.Â
As a team, Minnesota outhit Maryland .252 to .089 and had a 49-32 kill advantage. The Gophers put up 52 digs to Maryland's 49. Each team had nine blocks.
The Gophers are back in action at Maturi Pavilion on Wednesday, September 26th at 8 p.m., against the Wisconsin Badgers. The match will be available on Big Ten Network.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota took the first set, 25-19 The Gophers went up 13-10, but Maryland battled back and later took an 18-16 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota responded out of the break and rattled off three-straight and a 19-18 lead as the Terps called a timeout. The Maryland timeout, however, didn't stop the Gophers as they pushed the lead to 21-18, forcing Maryland to burn its second timeout. Minnesota closed off the set with a 4-1 run, including two blocks for the 24th and 25th point for a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers held a 17-12 kill advantage and earned a 25-19 second set win. Minnesota opened the second set with a 6-1 lead as Maryland called a timeout. Minnesota later went up 11-8 with a kill from Hart, and 14-9 on a block from Samedy/Morgan. After a Rollins kill for the 17-11 point, Maryland called a timeout. The Terrapins battled back to cut the Gopher lead to two at 19-17, and at 20-18, but the Gophers closed out the set on a 5-1 run, including back-to-back blocks, for a 2-0 lead. Â Â Â
Set 3: Minnesota closed out the match hitting .342 as the Gophers won the set and match, 25-18. The Gophers opened the third set with an 8-2 run as Maryland called a timeout. Pittman later pushed the score to 10-6, while Hart put the Gophers up, 13-8 and after a Maryland attack error and a 15-9 Gopher lead, the Terps called its first timeout. Minnesota, however, tacked on three after the break, including an ace by Seliger-Swenson. A Samedy kill later put the score at 19-10, while Jasmyn Martin added the Gophers' 22nd point. Minnesota ended the match with a Samedy kill to put the match at a 3-0 win. Â
