MINNEAPOLIS – The Maroon and White teams are locked in a stalemate after the first week of play in the annual Steak 'n' Beans World Series at Siebert Field.
Game 1: White 7, Maroon 3
Game one saw the White team stake an early lead with five runs before the end of the first inning. Eddie Estrada drove in a pair of runs in the early going, while Jacob Hitz and Riley Swenson each drove in a pair in the victory.
Jake Stevenson worked the first 3.0 innings for White, collecting a series-leading four strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk.
On the Maroon side, Easton Bertrand doubled and drove in two runs, while Max Meyer also slugged a double while going 3-for-3 with a walk on the day. Maroon used four pitchers on the day, with Patrick Fredrickson working the first two innings. Sam Bridges worked a shutout sixth.
Game 2: Maroon 5, White 3
Maroon flipped the script in game two, scoring early with an RBI groundout by Easton Bertrand and a two-run triple off the bat Chase Stanke in the first inning on Saturday. Meyer continued to swing a hot bat with an RBI single in the second, while Jack Wassel came in to score during a rundown later in the inning.
White got on the board in the third, but would score in only that inning. Eli Wilson scored Riley Smith and Jordan Kozicky with a single, eventually coming around to score on an error later in the inning.
Bubba Horton and Danny Kapala each struck out four for White on the day, with Horton working the first two innings while Kapala went 4.0 hitless innings in relief, allowing just a pair of walks. On the Maroon side, Sam Thoresen struck out three in 2.1 innings of work in a start. Rookie J.P. Massey made his Siebert Field debut on the mound, working a shutout sixth.
Meyer leads all Gophers with four hits through two games (batting .667) with a double and a walk while also making an impact defensively in the outfield … Stanke has thrown out a pair of would-be base stealers through two games … rookies Andrew Wilhite and Zack Raabe have each three stolen bases.
The two teams will match up yet again this weekend as the series continues this Friday and Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for just after 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
