Gophers Fall In Four to No. 4 Stanford

The No. 1 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell, 3-1, to No. 4 Stanford, today in Palo Alto, Calif. Minnesota fell in the first set, 23-25, won the second 25-23, and fell in the third and fourth, 17-25 and 23-25. With the loss, the Golden Gophers drop to 5-2 overall, while Stanford improves to 6-1.

Minnesota was led by freshman Adanna Rollins, who had 16 kills, did not commit an error and hit .571. Alexis Hart had 15 kills (.293), while Taylor Morgan and Stephanie Samedy each had nine kills. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 45 assists, while CC McGraw had a team-best 12 digs, followed by Samedy with 11 and Seliger-Swenson with 10. In team stats, Stanford hit .358 to Minnesota's .285, a 71-55 kill advantage and a 10-8 block lead. Minnesota had a narrow 54-53 dig lead.

Minnesota is back home next week as it hosts Green Bay, Thursday, and Kansas State, Saturday.  

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Despite the Gophers holding a 20-16 lead, Stanford came back to win the set, 25-23. Minnesota opened the set with an 11-6 lead as Pittman delivered a kill and caused Stanford to call a timeout. Minnesota later took a 14-8 lead off a Morgan kill, but Stanford rattled off four straight to cut the lead to 14-12 as Minnesota called a timeout. A Pittman slide gave the Gophers a 20-16 lead as Stanford called its second timeout. The Cardinal, however, battled back and tied up the set at 23-23 as Minnesota used its final timeout of the set. The Cardinal, however, closed out the set off a Minnesota attack error and a Stanford kill to take it, 25-23.

Set 2: The Gophers hit .444 and took the set, 25-23. Minnesota went up, 10-6, but Stanford battled back and tied the set at 11 as the Gophers called a timeout. The Cardinal, however, continued pressure and took a 15-11 lead as the Gophers called their second timeout. Minnesota responded and rattled off four points of its own when it had three kills from Morgan (2) and Samedy and a Barnes ace. It caused Stanford to use its first timeout of the set. The two teams tied four-straight points through 18-18 before Minnesota took a two-point lead. The Gophers went up 23-20 when Samedy added a kill as Stanford called a timeout. The Cardinal cut the lead to one at 23-22 and 24-23, but the Gophers closed out the set with a Rollins kill to tie up the match, 1-1.

Set 3: The Cardinal hit .645 (20-0-31) in the third set and a 25-17 win. Stanford opened the third with a 7-2 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers used their second timeout as the Cardinal took a 14-6 lead. The Gophers responded from their second timeout and went on a 6-2 run as Stanford called its first timeout at 16-12. Minnesota added a kill for the Gophers' 15th point (19-15) off a Hart kill. However, the Cardinal finished off the set with a 6-2 run and took a 2-1 match lead.

Set 4: Minnesota rebounded from the third set and opened the fourth with an 8-4 lead as Stanford called a timeout. The Gophers pushed the score to 11-7, but Stanford went on a 3-0 run as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota held a 14-11 lead off a Hart kill, and pushed the score to 16-14 off a quick set to Morgan. Stanford battled back and cut the Gopher lead to 17-16, but Minnesota pushed back and took a 20-17 lead off a Pittman/Seliger-Swenson block. Stanford called a timeout as the Gophers led, 21-17. Stanford came out of the break and cut the Gopher lead to one at 22-21 as Minnesota called a timeout. However, Stanford went on a run and took the set and match, 25-23.
