MINNEAPOLIS – After an impressive sweep over No. 9 Notre Dame last weekend on the road, a pair of Gopher Hockey players have earned weekly accolades with Mat Robson earning NCAA Third Star of the Week and Big Ten First Star of the Week honors and Blake McLaughlin earning Big Ten Second Star of the Week honors.
A native of Mississauga, Ont., Robson backstopped the Maroon & Gold to the sweep by making 76 saves on 78 shots over the weekend (.974). The netminder has picked up three-straight wins over top-10 teams, making 107 saves on 110 shots (.973) and allowing just one goal a game over the stretch to improve to 7-4-4 on the season. Robson leads the Big Ten with 501 saves on the year while his .931 save percentage ranks second in the Big Ten and sixth in the nation.
A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., McLaughlin recorded the game-winning goals in both games of the sweep – Minnesota's first under Bob Motzko. Moreover, the two goals were McLaughlin's first tallies with the University of Minnesota. The rookie forward notched his first collegiate tally in Friday's 5-1 win over the Irish (and added an assist) before replicating the goal scoring touch in dramatic fashion during Saturday's 2-1 win as he found the net on a breakaway with 7.8 seconds left in regulation for the deciding goal.
Minnesota continues the 2018-19 campaign with a two-game Big Ten series at Michigan State next weekend.
