University of Minnesota women's tennis head coach Catrina Thompson has announced that Lucia de Santa Ana (Montevideo, Uruguay) will join the Golden Gophers program next fall.
De Santa Ana played for Uruguay in the South American tournaments. She played in the Junior Fed Cup in 2016 where she was ranked third in the South American Tennis Confederation. Holding a No. 1 ranking over the course of a few years, de Santa Ana competed in several Grade A and 1 ITF tournaments. She won the ITF tournament in Trinidad and Tobago. Lucia is the daughter of Ana Pastorino, former tennis player, and Omar de Santa Ana, former pro basketball player and Uruguayan National Basketball champion in 1985. She went to school in Uruguay and attended an American school until she was in eighth grade. From there, she enrolled in K12 Online School in Florida. De Santa Ana also has two older sisters, Giannina and Jessica, and is also skilled in martial arts.
"We are excited to announce the signing of Lucia de Santa Ana to join our Gopher Women's Tennis Program for the 2019-2020 season," Thompson said. "Lucia is going to fit right in with the culture of our team and brings a highly competitive attitude along with a successful junior tennis career. I'm looking forward to watching her develop in our tennis program."
