No. 2 Minnesota fell to No. 1 Wisconsin in game one of this weekend's Border Battle series at Ridder Arena Friday night.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team fell to top-ranked Wisconsin by a score of 2-1 in game one of this weekend's Border Battle series in front of 3,196 fans at Ridder Arena Friday night.

Nicole Schammel scored the Gophers' lone goal and Alex Gulstene made 24 saves to lead the Maroon & Gold. Minnesota (21-3-1, 11-3-1-0 WCHA) saw a 14-game winning streak come to an end with the loss to the team's border rivals.

Wisconsin (21-2-0, 11-2-0-0 WCHA) received goals from Emily Clark and Maddie Rolfes along with a 20-save effort from goaltender Kristen Campbell.

"It was a good hockey game here tonight between two good teams, both playing very well defensively," head coach Brad Frost said. "I don't think there was a lot of offensive play both ways, but when you have two really good skating teams like that, the scoring chances are going to be limited. Defensively, I thought we played very well, but we didn't generate as much as we needed on the front end to get some second and third opportunities and the result is only scoring one goal in a night. Most nights that's not going to get it done."

The Badgers got on the board first with a power-play goal from Clark at the 5:20 mark of the opening period. Minnesota evened the game at 1-1 just 18 seconds into the second period as Schammel netted her seventh goal of the season. Grace Zumwinkle and Patti Marshall picked up assists on the play. Wisconsin scored the eventual game-winner off the stick of Rolfes with 5:01 remaining in the middle frame.

"The crowd was awesome," Schammel said of the Gophers' best turnout so far this season. "It's really fun when the crowd is here, and it makes for an awesome atmosphere."

Both teams had two opportunities on the power play with the Badgers going one-for-two and the Gophers ending the game scoreless on two attempts. Wisconsin had a 26-21 edge in shots on goal for the game.

The teams meet in game two of the Border Battle at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday at Ridder Arena.
