Gophers Victorious in First Conference Meet

The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team outscored Iowa 195.475 to 194.350 to win their first Big Ten matchup of the 2019 season. The Gophers led from the outset and never relinquished the lead to the Hawkeyes throughout the meet. Minnesota improves to 4-2 on the season with tonight's win over Iowa.
The Gophers posted their highest single event team score so far this year, a 49.175 on the uneven bars. Four gymnasts scored a 9.800 or higher on the apparatus, the best of which was Ivy Lu's 9.875. Lu was named the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week this past Tuesday after her uneven bars performance at the Best of Minnesota meet last weekend.
Lexy Ramler won the all-around competition for the third week in a row. After an outstanding beam routine that earned her a 9.950, the St. Michael, Minn. native finished the night with a total score of 39.450. She posted a 9.825 on vault, a 9.850 on bars and a 9.825 on floor exercise to round out her scores.
Vault
The highest score of the night on vault was Ramler's 9.825, followed by Ona Loper's 9.750 and Paige Williams' 9.675. Freshmen Tiarre Sales and Ali Sonier scored a 9.675 and a 9.600 respectively to count towards the team's vault event score of 48.525.
Bars
Minnesota entered tonight's meet ranked tenth in the country on the uneven bars, and they've once again shown just why they deserve recognition on this event. Ivy Lu recorded the highest-score on bars for the Gophers and for the whole competition with her 9.875. Ramler and Loper followed closely behind with a 9.850 and a 9.825, while Kristen Quaglia and Sales each earned a 9.775 for their routines.
Beam
Ramler stuck her landing and blew the rest of the competition away on the Balance Beam with her score of 9.950. Loper notched a 9.850 for her routine this evening, while Sonier and Sales both received 9.800's for their beam performances. Kaitlyn Higgins made her Minnesota debut tonight with her beam routine, which earned a 9.675 and brought the event score to a 49.075. This is the first meet this year in which the Gophers scored a 49.000 or higher on two events..
Floor
Minnesota finished floor exercise with a team score of 48.700. Ramler won the event with a 9.825 and Williams took second in the competition with her 9.800. Loper recorded the third-highest score for the Gophers after earning a 9.725. Rachel Culter's 9.700 and Sonier's 9.650 complete the scores counted for the team.
The Minnesota women's gymnastics team will return to competition on Saturday, Jan. 26 as they travel to University Park, Pa. to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions at 3:00 p.m. CT.
