Gophers Cruise to Road Sweep

Minnesota won 7-1 in game two to seal a WCHA sweep over Ohio State on Saturday.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team erupted for six second-period goals and cruised to a 7-1 win over No. 7 Ohio State to cap off a series sweep on the road at OSU Ice Rink on Saturday afternoon.

Minnesota (24-3-1, 14-3-1-0 WCHA) received at least one point from 14 different players in the win, led by multiple points from Taylor Heise (2g-1a), Kelly Pannek (2a), Sarah Potomak (2a), and Taylor Williamson (2a). The Gophers combined for 14 goals on the weekend after earning a 7-2 win in game one.

Ohio State (15-11-0, 9-9-0 WCHA) received its lone goal from Emma Maltais while Amanda Zeglen and Andrea Braendli split time in net. Zeglen made 12 saves on 17 shots faced over the opening 29:42 before Braendli made 19 saves on 21 shots in the game's final 30:18.

Sydney Scobee earned her eighth win of the season with 21 saves on 22 shots faced over the opening 51:30 of the game. Emma May played the last 8:23 in net for the Maroon & Gold but did not face a shot on goal. The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes, 38-22, for the game.
"Just a great effort here tonight, a big second period scoring six and just playing great and playing our game and doing everything that we want to do, in particular on the road," head coach Brad Frost said. "An incredible sweep against a very good team, and we're looking forward to getting home and facing a very good UMD team next weekend."

The teams played a scoreless first period with OSU holding a slight advantage in shots on goal, 10-7, over the opening 20 minutes, but period two saw the Gophers post a season-high six-goal period.

Crystalyn Hengler started the scoring just 1:41 into the middle frame, netting her first career goal and converting on Minnesota's first power play of the game.

Heise then scored back-to-back goals just 37 seconds apart, extending the Gophers' lead to three at the 7:11 mark of the middle frame. Maltais put OSU on the board with a shorthanded goal 44 seconds later, but the Gophers added three more before the end of the period.

Taylor Wente scored off a feed from Emily Brown and Nicole Schammel on the power play at the 8:31 mark before Alex Woken scored her third goal of the series at 9:42. Amy Potomak rounded out the second-period scoring with a power-play tally with 7:23 remaining.

In the third period, Grace Zumwinkle scored her third goal of the series, giving the Gophers a six-goal lead with 7:53 remaining, just 30 seconds after May entered the game for the Maroon & Gold.

The Gophers' special teams were nearly perfect in the series despite allowing a shorthanded goal in game two. Minnesota was three-for-three on the power play and two-for-two on the penalty kill in game two and finished the weekend five-for-seven with the skater advantage and seven-for-seven on the penalty kill.

Minnesota returns home to host Minnesota Duluth at Ridder Arena next weekend. The Gophers and Bulldogs are scheduled to face off at 4:07 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 2 and 1:07 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 3.
