Gophers fall to No. 8 UCLA at ITA Kick-Off Weekend

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team fell by a score of 4-0 to the No. 8 UCLA Bruins in the first day of competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles. The ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament marks the beginning of the spring season for the Gophers' squad.
In doubles draws the Gophers fell to an 0-1 team score after the Minnesota duos of Tiffany Huber / Tina Kreinis and River Hart / Bita Mancera were defeated by scores of 2-6 and 3-6 respectively. The Gophers would finish doubles action in Los Angeles with an 0-2 record.
Despite a valiant effort from Gophers, the nationally seeded Bruins proved to be too much for the Maroon and Gold as they were edged out in singles play. To start, the 95th ranked Tina Kreinis took on fellow nationally seeded opponent #11, Elysia Bolton. Kreinis would fall by way of 0-6, 3-6. In the second draw, Tiffany Huber faced-off with the 113th nationally seeded opponent Abi Altick. Huber would fall in straight sets 2-6, 2-6. The Bruins clinched the singles draw points after Caitlyn Merzbacher fell to Alaina Miller by a final score of 1-6, 2-6.
"We anticipated a tough match today and we experience a top-ten team early in the season which will help us as the season progresses" head coach Catrina Thompson added.
With the loss to the Bruins, the Gophers will face No. 41 Florida International in the consolation draw of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at 11 a.m. (CT).
