MINNEAPOLIS – After leading the nation in scoring over the last week, Gopher Hockey senior captain Tyler Sheehy has been named the NCAA Second Star of the Week and the Big Ten First Star of the Week.
A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy continued to find the score sheet in the Border Battle – leading all NCAA skaters with seven points (one goal, six assists) last week – as the senior forward now has 22 career points (six goals, 16 assists) in 16 career games against Wisconsin.
Sheehy, who has recorded points in 15 of the last 16 games for Minnesota, matched his single-game career high with four points (one goal, three assists) in the Gophers' 9-4 win on Friday before picking up assists on all three Minnesota tallies in Saturday's 3-4 loss to the Badgers.
With 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 25 games this year, the Hobey Baker Award nominee leads all active Gophers and is tied for third among all active scorers in the NCAA with 135 points (51 goals, 84 assists) in 136 career games. Sheehy currently ranks 41st all-time at Minnesota in scoring.
Additionally, Sheehy helped the Maroon & Gold special teams go 6-for-10 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the Border Battle series. Minnesota now leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth in the nation on the advantage at .258 (23-for-89) while the penalty kill has not surrendered a goal in seven of the last eight games.
Minnesota continues a four-game home stand next weekend with a two-game Big Ten series against Michigan at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Tickets are available at GopherSports.com.
