Gophers Ready for World Championships

10/1/2019 3:39:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics

Two Gophers are set to represent the maroon and gold and their countries in the next two weeks as the World Gymnastics Championships take place in Stuttgart, Germany Oct. 4-13.

Minnesota junior captain Shane Wiskus will compete for Team USA at his first-ever Worlds. Wiskus is the only current collegiate gymnast on the United States' five-man squad and is also the youngest at 21 years old. A native of Spring Park, Minn., Shane is one of three gymnasts to represent the Land of 10,000 Lakes in Germany, with Sunisa Lee and Grace McCallum on the women's side also hailing from Minnesota.

Alum Justin Karstadt is a member of his native Canada's world team and made a stop in Portugal for one week before heading to Germany for the competition. He had an exciting summer with Team Canada, which included a trip to the Pan-American Games, where he helped his country earn its first team medal at the event, a bronze, in 20 years. Team Canada has not yet named its finalized five-man team and alternate.

Both Wiskus and Karstadt were selected as First Team All-Big Ten members last season and raked in All-American honors: Karstadt on pommel horse and Wiskus all-around, on parallel bars and vault. The two will reunite and compete in the same Subdivision 5 throughout the World Championships.

It will be the last chance for both to help their countries qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with nine remaining team bids up for grabs. It would be Canada's first team appearance at the Olympics since 2008.

Subdivision 5 is set to kick off action in Stuttgart with podium training on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. local time. Stuttgart is seven hours ahead of CST, and the converted event schedule is as follows:

Podium Training (Subdivisions 5-8): Thursday, Oct. 3 - 3 a.m.
Team Qualification (Subdivisions 5-8): Monday, Oct. 7 - 3 a.m.
MAG Team Final: Wednesday, Oct. 9 - 6:45 a.m.

MAG Event Finals (Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings): Saturday, Oct. 12 - 9 a.m.
