Gophers Celebrate Historic Season

10/1/2019 4:07:00 PM | Softball

This past weekend the University of Minnesota softball program brought last year's team together with the 2019-20 squad to celebrate history and turn the page to this coming season at the annual fall banquet.

Minnesota's historic run brought an entire state together as the Gophers went 5-0 while hosting the Minneapolis Regional and the first ever Minneapolis Super Regional. The Gophers advanced to the first ever Women's College World Series in program history in the NCAA era.

Minnesota ended the year No. 8 in both major polls, the highest to end a season in program history, and finished with a No. 7 RPI to set another school record. Minnesota set five out of the top-10 all-time home attendance numbers this past season. The Gophers also broke a weekend attendance record with 3,679 fans across the Northwestern series.

At the banquet the Gophers handed out team awards:

MVP- MaKenna Partain
Pitcher- Amber Fiser
Freshman- Natalie DenHartog
Golden Bar Award- Maddie Houlihan
Teammate- Emily Hansen

We caught up with head coach Jamie Trachsel after the banquet and she had a thank you letter she wanted to share:

"It was an incredible night, getting everyone from our 2019 team back together one last time. Banquets are always special, but this one felt a little different as we celebrated a historic season, paid tribute to everyone who played a part in last season's success, and honored a senior class who led this program through uncharted water.

Families, friends, staff and program supporters gathered to recognize the first ever Minnesota Softball Women's College World Series team in the NCAA era. A HUGE thank you to everyone who made this night a tremendous success, a season for the record books and one to remember.

We are very grateful to all of the people behind the scenes who made our season special and were a reason why it was successful. Thank you to the administrators who work directly with our program and the event management team who made our home games and postseason atmosphere one of the best environments in the country. Thank you to one of the best field crews in the nation who work tirelessly and made our field playable regardless of the conditions, and our academic team who aided in the best team GPA (3.63) in program history.

We have incredible people in this program who take pride in what they do and want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Everyone from the outside, in - to our wise strength and conditioning coach, clever and creative SID, devoted academic advisor, committed athletic trainer, loyal and trusting student managers, and to everyone in between - thank you for helping make Minnesota Softball great.

Last but certainly not least, a heartfelt thank you to our immediate staff and family members. Without your commitment and sacrifice, none of this would be possible."
