Gophers Sweep Northwestern

The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Northwestern, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten. Northwestern falls to 9-10 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers with 10 kills. She hit a season-best .474 and added three digs and a block. Alexis Hart offered up seven kills, two blocks and two digs. Taylor Morgan had six kills, hitting .500, as well as four blocks. Regan Pittman had six kills, two digs and a team-best five blocks. Airi Miyabe had a season-best six kills and four blocks, as well as one dig. Adanna Rollins offered up five kills, 14 digs, one block and one ace. Bayley McMenimen had 20 assists and one ace, and Kylie Miller had 14 assists in her first game back with the Gophers. CC McGraw added a match-best 16 digs and one ace. 

As a team, Minnesota had match bests 41 kills, 48 digs, nine blocks and hit .351. Northwestern had 33 kills, 42 digs, 2.5 blocks and hit .098. 

 
Notable
Minnesota has now defeated Northwestern the past nine meetings. Tonight's match also marked the only contest between the two teams this season.

Quotable
McCutcheon on the Gophers' improvement on serving and passing from the previous match: "I thought we passed well and we served more assertively. We had a couple errors here and there, but overall, felt like we were knocking them out of system in pretty good clips. I felt like we've made some improvements."

Up Next
Minnesota hosts No. 17 Illinois, tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The match marks Minnesota's annual Dig Pink event for breast cancer awareness. The match is also televised on Big Ten Network.

How they won:
First Set: Minnesota hit .345 in the opening set, while it held Northwestern to just .059 as the Gophers won, 25-18. The Gophers led from the opening point and maintained the lead throughout the set.
Second Set: The Gophers bettered its first set hitting efficiency when they had 13 kills and just two errors in 26 attempts. Tied through 8-8, Minnesota went on a 4-1 run, good enough for the lead throughout the set.
Third Set: The Gophers closed out the third set hitting .308 and had 15 kills in 39 attempts. The Gophers also had three blocks in the set to solidify the win.
