Gophers Defeat No. 17 Illinois

For the second time this season, the No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated No. 17 Illinois in four sets. The home win at Maturi Pavilion improves the Golden Gophers' record to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten. Illinois drops to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
CC McGraw had a career-best 32 digs. Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers in kills with 16. She also had 12 digs, one ace and one block. Adanna Rollins offered up 11 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Regan Pittman had a team-best seven blocks. She also had nine kills, hitting .400, and two digs. Taylor Morgan had six kills, two digs and two blocks. Airi Miyabe offered up six kills, two blocks and one dig for the Gophers. Bayley McMenimen had 34 assists and eight digs. Kylie Miller added 11 assists, seven digs and one ace.
As a team, Minnesota had 55 kills, 92 digs, nine blocks and hit .185. Illinois had 58 kills, 85 digs, 12 blocks and hit .141.
Notable
CC McGraw added a career-high 32 digs in the match tonight. Her previous best was 24, which happened twice in her Gopher career, the last against Purdue, Sept. 28. The 32 digs is the most by a Golden Gopher since 2010.

I wanted to just give every ounce of energy I had for the team," McGraw said. "Any game in the Big Ten is a grind so we just had to take it one point at a time, encourage my teammates and push them, motivate them, to do whatever we could to win this game."

First Set: Minnesota opened the match with an 8-1 run en route to a 25-16 set win. The Gophers had five blocks in the set and also, at one point, held a 10-point lead at 16-6 as Illinois used its second timeout of the set.
Second Set: The Gophers dug out of a 12-17 deficit to come back and win the set, 25-22. Minnesota went on a 7-2 to tie the set at 19-19. With the two teams tied tying through 22-22, Minnesota closed out the set on two kills and an Illni attack error for the set win.
Third Set: After 12 tie scores and seven lead changes, Illinois took the third set with a 25-22 win. With the teams tied at 20-20, the Illini went on a 5-2 run, including an ace for set point and a kill to cut Minnesota's lead to 2-1.
Fourth Set: Minnesota built a 17-9 lead in the set, while Samedy had six kills in the set. As Illinois cut Minnesota's lead to 24-23, the Gophers finished off the set with a Pittman kill for the win.
