Gophers On the Road to Michigan & Michigan State

GOPHERS ON THE ROAD    
Minnesota is back on the road when it travels to Michigan and Michigan State, Friday and Sunday, Oct. 25 and Oct. 27. Friday's match is slated for 5 p.m. (CT) in Ann Arbor, Mich., while Sunday's tilt is set 11 a.m. (CT), in East Lansing, Mich. 

FOLLOW THE GOPHERS    
Both matches this week are televised on Big Ten Network. Fans can watch the BTN broadcast on the linear station as well as through the FOX app on mobile or tablet. Game day central pages will also be available on gophersports.com. 

ABOUT MICHIGAN  
Michigan is entering the weekend with a 13-5 record. The Wolverines are 6-2 in conference play, losing to No. 5 Nebraska and No. 8 Penn State. Paige Jones has a team-best 226 kills, averaging 3.59 kills per set. She is followed by Sydney Wetterstrom, who has 174 kills. May Pertofsky leads the team in blocks with 54 and in aces with 25. Natalie Smith offers up 200 digs, and Mackenzi Welsh has 687 assists. As a team, Michigan is hitting .277 and averages 13.49 kills per set.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE    
Michigan State enters the Minnesota match with a 13-5 record. They are 4-4 in the Big Ten, most recently losing to No. 8 Penn State in straight sets. Meredith Norris leads the Spartans in kills and aces. She has 188 kills, averages 3.30 kills per set and has 19 aces. Naya Gros has a team-best 86 blocks, followed by Rebecka Poljan with 74. Audrey Alford offers up 320 assists, and Elena Shklyar has 257. Jamye Cox adds 251 digs. As a team, Michigan State is hitting .242 and averages 12.34 kills per set.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The Gophers are 56-15 all-time against Michigan, dating back to 1975. Minnesota won its only meeting against the Wolverines last year, 3-0. 
    Minnesota is 54-19 all-time against Michigan State, dating back to 1976. This weekend's contest marks the only meeting between the two teams this year. The Gophers won both meetings between the two teams last season. 

GOPHER VOLLEYBALL MOURNS THE LOSS OF HEBERT    
University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of legendary Hall of Fame volleyball coach, Mike Hebert. Surrounded by his family, Hebert passed away on Oct. 21, 2019, in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 75.
    Hebert was a volleyball head coach for 35 years and led the Gophers for 15. During his Minnesota career from 1996-2010, he brought the Golden Gophers onto the national stage and collegiate volleyball prominence. Hebert retired from coaching in 2010 with a 381-137 record at Minnesota. While at the helm of the Gophers, he won more than 75 percent of his games and led Minnesota to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, eight NCAA Regional trips, three Final Fours and a Big Ten championship in 2002. Minnesota also reached the NCAA championship game in 2004.

ON THE DOCKET    
Minnesota splits home and road action next week when it hosts Ohio State, Oct. 30, and at Purdue, Sunday, Nov. 3 The Wednesday night against the Buckeyes is set for 7 p.m., while the Sunday tilt is at 12 p.m. CT. 

LAST MATCH RECAP
For the second time this season, the University of Minnesota defeated No. 17 Illinois in four sets. CC McGraw had a career-best 32 digs. Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers in kills with 16. She also had 12 digs, one ace and one block. Adanna Rollins offered up 11 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Regan Pittman had a team-best seven blocks. She also had nine kills, hitting .400, and two digs. Taylor Morgan had six kills, two digs and two blocks. Airi Miyabe offered up six kills, two blocks and one dig for the Gophers. Bayley McMenimen had 34 assists and eight digs. Kylie Miller added 11 assists, seven digs and one ace.

MCGRAW GARNERS B1G WEEKLY AWARD
Sophomore libero CC McGraw was named the league's defensive player of the week after her performance last weekend. It marks McGraw's second award this season and the team's eighth honor this year.
    McGraw averaged 6.86 digs per set in a pair of wins over Northwestern and No. 17 Illinois last weekend. She also added six assists, did not commit one reception error, and added an ace. Against Northwestern last Friday, McGraw had 16 digs, tallied three assists and one ace. Against the Illini Saturday, McGraw added a career-best 32 digs and three assists. Her previous best was 24 set twice in her career. McGraw became the first Gopher to earn 30 digs in a match since 2010, breaking a nine-year record. Playing in 45 sets this season, McGraw has a team-best 209 digs and ranks third in the league in digs per set (4.64).

DID YOU KNOW? 
Minnesota had 90 digs against Illinois last weekend. The last time the Gophers had over 90 digs in a match dates back to 2016, when Minnesota had 100 against Nebraska on Nov. 23, 2016 in five sets. 

RPI AND THE GOPHERS
The Gophers are ranked 11th in the latest RPI, announced by the NCAA. Baylor, Stanford and Wisconsin round out the top three. 

GOPHERS RANKED SEVENTH IN AVCA POLL    
Minnesota is ranked No. 7 in this week's poll, announced Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In all, six Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the preseason top 25. Nebraska holds the Big Ten's top spot at No. 5, followed by Wisconsin (6), Minnesota (7), Penn State (8), Illinois (17) and Purdue (20). Michigan is receiving votes. 

200 CAREER WINS FOR MCCUTCHEON    
Against Illinois last week, head coach Hugh McCutcheon registered his 200th career win as the Gopher head coach. Since being at the helm of Gopher volleyball in 2012, McCutcheon owns a 200-50 career record. In his first 200 wins, Minnesota has won two Big Ten titles, went to two NCAA Final Fours and coached three Big Ten Players of the Year (Daly Santana, Sarah Wilhite and Samantha Seliger-Swenson) as well as 15 individuals to All-America or All-America honorable mention status 27 times.
