Gophers Earn Comeback Win Over Michigan

The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball program erased an 0-2 deficit and came back to win, 3-2 over Michigan, tonight in Ann Arbor, Mich. With the win, the Golden Gophers improved to 8-1 overall and 14-3 overall. Michigan fell to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in league standings. 
Minnesota lost the first two sets, 22-25, 23-25, but came back to win the last three, 25-21, 25-18, 15-13 for its eight conference win of the season. As a team, Minnesota hit .310 and limited Michigan to .226, despite the Wolverines' 76-58 kills lead. Minnesota had 16 blocks in the match, including five in both the fourth and deciding fifth set.
A well-balanced attack, Minnesota had four individuals with double-digit kills. Alexis Hart paved the way for the Gophers. she had a season-best 20 kills and 45 attempts to hit .378. Stephanie Samedy added a double-double with 12 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Adanna Rollins tallied 11 kills and 10 digs for the double-double, while Regan Pittman added 10 kills, hit .348 and posted a career-best 11 blocks. Taylor Morgan and Hart also tallied five blocks.
Notables
-Tonight's contest marked the first time the Gophers played in five sets this season. It was Minnesota's first five-set win since Nov. 17, 2018.
-Pittman's 11 blocks bettered her eight blocks she set in 2018, also against Michigan.

"Obviously really impressed with the outcome, but also how the team went about doing it was great," head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "Michigan is a great team, and they were playing well. For our athletes to hang in there and weather that storm in the first two sets and find a way to win in the last three was really impressive. It's a special road win for us."

How the won the set:
First Set: After nine tie scores and five lead changes, Michigan took the first set, 25-22. Minnesota took the early lead, but Michigan tied the set at 14-14. Tied at 22-22, Michigan added three straight kills for the set win.
Second Set: Despite hitting .483, Minnesota fell, 25-23 in the second. Tied at 20-20, Michigan went a 5-3 run to close out the second set, including a kill and a block for the set win.
Third Set: The Gophers took the third set, 25-21, to cut the Michigan lead to 2-1. Tied at 14-14, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run for a 19-14 lead. Michigan cut the lead to one at 22-21, but Minnesota closed out the set on a 3-0 run for the win.
Fourth Set: Trailing early in the set, Minnesota came back to win, 25-18. After Minnesota burned a timeout at 4-0, the Gophers came back to tie the set at 9-9 and later took a 15-12 lead. Leading 22-18, Minnesota had two kills from Hart and an ace from Pittman for a 25-18 set win.
Fifth Set: With Minnesota trailing, 5-8, the Gophers went on a 6-0 run. Of those six points, Minnesota added four straight blocks for an 11-8 lead. Shea Rubright subbed into the front row and added three blocks. Michigan, however, tied the set at 12-12. With the score at 13-13, Minnesota had a kill from Samedy for match point, while Morgan added the final dagger and block of the match for the 3-2 win.
