Gophers Drop Devastating Loss to Iowa

ST. PAUL, Minn. – As Iowa scored a goal with only 22 seconds remaining in the contest, the University of Minnesota soccer team dropped their second game this season with under 30 seconds remaining in a match. Despite coming back from a first half deficit, the Gophers fell to the Hawkeyes 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the final home game of the season.
After conceding the opening goal in the 37th minute off a beautifully placed ball, the Gophers struck back just a few moments into the second half.
"Again we went down and we came back," head coach Stef Golan said. "We put ourselves in position to win. But in the end it came down to the details."
Paige Elliott's first career goal in the 58th minute came from Alana Dressely's first career assist. Dressely launched her cross from the left-side of the 18-yard box and it perfectly landed on Elliott's head in front of the net.
In addition to Elliott's and Dressely's milestones, Sunday was an afternoon of firsts for the Gophers, starting with freshman Linnea Yacovella who made her first career start after making seven appearances earlier this season.
Then, when Cachet Lue went down early in the game after blocking a shot, senior defender Catherine Billings played a season-high of 69 minutes.
"All we wanted to focus on was performing our very best," Billings said. "Playing today was something I've been preparing for my whole career. I felt confident and felt like I did my job."
The biggest early moment of the match came when the Gophers' Megan Gray blocked an Iowa shot from hitting the net when she leapt in the area and stopped the ball with her head.
Offensively, the Gophers totaled 13 shots, led by senior Nikki Albrecht who recorded four total shots. The most efficient Gopher was Makenzie Langdok who had two shots on goal in her only two attempts.
As per usual, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen had a splendid day in net with six saves and her only two goals conceded coming off a well-time combinations and well-placed passes.
