Katie Duong's First Career Goal Keeps Gophers in Contention

EVANSTON, Ill. – With Katie Duong's 81st minute goal, the Minnesota soccer team defeated Northwestern 1-0 on a chilly night on the shores of Lake Michigan to stay in postseason contention.
Duong's goal was the first of her career in Maroon and Gold and, in a one-goal game, her first game-winner.Â
Manthy Brady's assist on the goal was the second of her career after she had an assist on August 22 in the season opener.
"We created a lot of good opportunities tonight and we moved a lot of people around and created a lot of good chances," Duong said after the game.Â
The victory also marks the Gophers first road victory of the season.Â
The Gophers dominated the first half statistically with the advantage in shots (4-0) and corner kicks (2-0) while the two teams were tied with one shot on goal.
Duong recorded the first shot of the day for the Gophers with a long-range effort in the 12th minute. The Oregon native finished with three shots including the key one on goal.
Senior co-captain Nikki Albrecht had one of her best games of the season with five shots, including three hitting the frame. Albrecht made her presence known in the second half where she really picked up the pace and nearly scored the game-winner at several moments. Â
While the Gophers were tested defensively, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen wasn't called upon to make a save until the 44th minute on a Wildcats breakaway. Nielsen finished with two saves on the evening. Â
