MINNEAPOLIS -- Several Gopher women's hockey alums are among the professional women's hockey players spending the 2019-20 season participating in the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association (PWHPA).
The PWHPA kicked off its Dream Gap Tour this fall, bringing some of the world's best women's hockey players together to showcase their talent and bring awareness to the pay disparities between men's and women's professional sports. The tour has included stops in three cities so far: Toronto, Ontario; Hudson, N.H.; and Chicago, Ill., where the league organized four-team tournaments for the professional athletes to scrimmage each other along with host community events for young hockey players to meet the athletes. Eight Gopher women's hockey alums have suited up to play in the PWHPA's showcases, including Megan Bozek, Gigi Marvin, Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi, Hannah Brandt, Kelly Pannek, Amanda Kessel, and Noora Raty.
Toronto (Sept. 21-22)
The first Dream Gap Tour event, the Unifor Showcase, took place at Westwood Arena in Toronto, Ontario. Megan Bozek was the only Gopher alum at the event as she suited up for Team Jenner for the weekend. Though Bozek's team fell to Team Poulin in the championship game, Bozek was honored as the Tim Horton's Third Star of the Game.
New Hampshire (Oct. 5-6)
The Dream Gap Tour stop in Hudson, N.H. saw five former Gophers on the ice in the Dunkin' Women's Hockey Showcase. Gigi Marvin represented Team Flanagan, Dani Cameranesi and Kelly Pannek donned the Team Lamoureux jersey, and Gopher alum Lee Stecklein was the namesake for her own team that also included Hannah Brandt. Team Stecklein took home the championship banner for the weekend, assisted by Hannah Brandt who scored one of the team's five goals. During the consolation game, both Kelly Pannek and Dani Cameranesi scored for Team Lamoureux, propelling them to a win over Team Flanagan 5-2. Gigi Marvin also tallied a goal for Team Flanagan in the consolation game.
Chicago (Oct. 19-20)
All eight PWHPA Gopher alumni played in the Magellan Corporation Women's Hockey Showcase in Chicago. Team Granato included Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi, Amanda Kessel, and Kelly Pannek while Megan Bozek, Hannah Brandt, and Gigi Marvin suited up for Team Ruggiero, and Noora Raty was between the pipes for Team Hefford. Team Granado earned the winning title of the weekend over Team Hefford, with Amanda Kessel scoring a goal for the championship team.
The PWHPA is planning additional Dream Gap Tour events as the 2019-20 season continues. For the latest PWHPA news and initiatives, follow the squad at @PWHPA on Twitter.
