Gophers Earn Scoreless Draw Against Spartans

The Minnesota soccer team earned a point in the conference standings with a scoreless draw against Michigan State on Thursday night.
With an autumn chill in the air at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, the Gophers came out firing offensively from the get-go. In the first half alone, the Gophers recorded nine total shots with three reaching the Spartans' frame.
In comparison, the visitors only had two shots, with none on goal, in the first 45 minutes.
By the end of the game the Maroon and Gold had racked up 24 shots compared to the Spartans' eight. Between the last two games against Ohio State and now Michigan State, Minnesota has recorded 48 shots with 18 on goal. Even in the final moments of double overtime, Megan Gray and the Gophers kept pushing forward as the clock ticked closer to the 110-minute mark.
"In the last couple of games we've been able to create a lot more chances," midfielder Katie Duong said. "Even throughout hard times we've had a great attitude and bring the fight every game."
Despite the offensive barrage, the Gophers were kept scoreless by Spartans goalkeeper Lauren Kozal, who Gophers head coach Stef Golan called the player of the game.
The Gophers' attack was balanced throughout the night with four players notching at least four shots. Freshman forward Manthy Brady led the squad with seven shots while her fellow first-year Duong landed five of her six shots on target.
While she was only tested directly three times throughout the 110 minutes, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen earned her second consecutive shutout.
Next, the Gophers head out to Bloomington, Indiana, for an away match against the Hoosiers on Sunday afternoon. The following week Minnesota has only one match: a Thursday night meeting in Madison against the Badgers.
