Gophers Fall on Road in Rainy Bloomington
10/6/2019 2:23:00 PM | Soccer
The Minnesota soccer program fell 1-0 to the Indiana Hoosiers on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana.
Despite the final score, the Maroon and Gold backline once again played well on Sunday afternoon allowing four total shots with only a pair of those on target. The Gophers have not allowed more than a lone goal since Sept. 22 against Maryland.
Offensively as a team, Minnesota registered seven shots with three on goal.
"Consistency is what we're trying to drive towards," senior co-captain Nikki Albrecht said. "We didn't execute like we know we can. We didn't play up to our Minnesota caliber."
Midfielder Katie Duong led the Gophers in shots with three in the game, including one on goal. Duong narrowly missed an attempt from inside the box off a set piece that would have tied the game at the end of the first half.
Both Arianna Del Moral and Linnea Yacovella registered shots on goal coming off of the Gophers bench.Â
On the wing, Megan Gray and Patricia Ward stood out with their persistent attacks as aided by their blazing speed. Both Gray and Ward repeatedly launched crosses into the box, but none were able to connect.
Indiana scored the game-winner in the 36th minute when forward Chandra Davidson volleyed a long pass to the right of goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen. It marked the first goal Nielsen had surrendered in over 200 minutes since Sept. 27 against Penn State.
Â
Nielsen has not allowed more than a single goal since Sept. 22 against Maryland. In those four games, the team has allowed only 29 total shots with only nine reaching target and only two reaching the back of the net.
