Gophers Drop Border Battle 1-0

10/11/2019 7:11:00 PM | Soccer

MADISON, Wi. – The Gophers soccer team dropped their away match against the Wisconsin Badgers 1-0 on Friday night in Madison.

After making three saves in the first fifteen minutes, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen was well on her way to a great performance in net. Nielsen finished the first half with those three saves before finishing the match with five official saves as well as several game-changing efforts.

Several times, Nielsen came out of her net to clear the ball out of harm's way.  With about 40 seconds left in the match, the Badgers earned a breakaway attempt at the goal, but a diving Nielsen stopped that opportunity.

Nielsen has now allowed only two goals in the past 380 minutes of conference play since September 29.

"My backline was on tonight and it's unfortunate they were able to get an early on past us," Nielsen said. "We take positives and all the good things we've done moving forward."

The ultimate difference came when the Badgers' Dani Rhodes scored in the 22nd minute for the early game-winning score. The Badgers totaled 19 shots in the game, including 11 in the final 45 minutes, plus they had seven more corner kicks than the Gophers.

Midfielder Katie Duong generated a handful of offensive opportunities for the Gophers, but no one clad in Maroon was able to put the finishing touches into the back of the net. Duong finished with two shots, including one on goal, to tie for the team lead.

As a team, the Gophers totaled seven shots, three of those on target. Wisconsin goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer handled all Minnesota attacks.

The Gophers have been within striking distance in each of the team's last two losses, which both ended as narrow 1-0 defeats.
