THIS WEEK IN GOPHER SOCCER

The Gophers finish up their 2019 home schedule with a pair of Big Ten home games. First up, the Maroon and Gold welcome Nebraska for a late afternoon match (4pm) on Thursday before welcoming Iowa for a Sunday matinee at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

This Thursday's match will be televised on ESPNU. It will also feature Fall Frolic where the first 300 fans will receive a FREE apple cider cake donut. Plus, University staff and faculty can receive discounted admission to the game.

The Gophers' final game on the schedule will feature a number of great options for fans at our pre-game event: Free soccer signs, $1 hot dogs, a photo booth, poster making, and yard games as well.

SERIES HISTORY

Since Minnesota's first official season in 1993, the Gophers have faced Nebraska 14 times and Iowa 21 times. Against the Cornhuskers, the Gophers had not won a game until a 6-3 victory in 2011, Nebraska's first season in the Big Ten. Since that point, the Gophers are 7-2 against them with a 23-11 goal advantage.

When taking on the Hawkeyes, the Gophers are historically 13-4-4 with three straight shutout victories dating back to 2015. Since coach Stef Golan took over as head coach in 2012, the Gophers have outscored their rival 10-4.

NIELSEN SAVES

In her past four games, junior goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen has a pair of shutouts with 12 saves to her credit. During that stretch, Nielsen went 235 minutes without allowing a goal and then continued her dominance again with only one goal allowed over 313 straight minutes from that point onwards.

Nielsen, a Shoreline, Washington, native, was the 2018 Big Ten Tournament Defensive Player of the Year last season and has had another great season. Across the year she has been in net for 1,415 minutes (sixth in the NCAA) with 55 total saves (103rd in the NCAA).

KUEHN ATTACKING

After posing no points last season, junior Athena Kuehn already has five points this season with two goals and an assist. Not only has Kuehn scored two goals, but both were Gophers game-winners in the team's matches against No. 14 NC State and Ohio State.

Over the course of the season, she has played over 1,300 minutes (third most on the team) and has displayed great offensive efficiency with her two goals coming on only three shots on goal.

KATIE IN THE MIDDLE

Freshman Katie Duong leads the Gophers with 31 shots despite missing three games earlier this season while training with the U20 Women's National Team. Duong has posted 20 shots in Big Ten play with ten of those on frame.
