Gophers Draw Nebraska 1-1

10/17/2019 6:59:00 PM | Soccer

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota soccer program drew with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Thursday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

After conceding an early goal in the 20th minute to the Cornhuskers, the Gopher picked up play and took the fight to their opposition. The attack paid off when senior co-captain Nikki Albrecht boomed one of her three shots on the day, this one from 35-yards out, to earn the point for the Gophers.

Albrecht's shot swung through the air and landed at the feet of goalkeeper Aubrei Corder who let it slip through her legs. Albrecht led the starters with three shots and two on goal.

"Coming out of halftime were happy with how hard we were working, but how can we incorporate that warrior mentality and have it play pretty," Albrecht said.

As a team, the Gophers recorded ten shots in regulation before finishing with 17 across the whole match. Plus, the team earned six corner kicks after the end of the first 45 minutes.

Off the bench, freshman Linnea Yacovella led the team with four total shots in her 53 minutes. Yacovella combined her physicality and speed at the top of the formation to earn the Gophers' possession and control of the game.

After allowing the first goal, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen stopped the four shots on goal that followed. In her past five games, Nielsen has now made 16 saves and allowed only three goals across 490 minutes.

Even with a draw, the Gophers were happy to settle for at least one point on the night.

"It was the first time in a long time we've come back," head coach Stef Golan said. "That was important for us to do that. If we had done it all from the start maybe we put ourselves in that winning position."
