Gophers' Rookie Class Ranked Among Nation's Best

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Baseball program's 2019 recruiting class has been tabbed as the 54th best in the nation, as determined by Collegiate Baseball's annual rankings.
Minnesota's rookie class comes in at third in the Big Ten Conference, trailing only Michigan (36th) and Maryland (43rd). Overall, eight Big Ten programs made their way onto Collegiate Baseball's list.
"I am extremely excited about this outstanding group of young men who are in the 2019 recruiting class. I strongly believe that they embody the values of our Team 'WHY' which closely aligns each of these young men with our program's purpose and mission," said head coach John Anderson. "Each of these players have a strong desire to wear the 'M' as well as the talent, internal motivation and the intangibles that will translate into consistent, optimal performance on the field, in the classroom and in the community. When they arrive on campus in the fall of 2019, I am confident that their daily actions will match the expectations that our long and proud tradition requires for members of the Golden Gopher Baseball family."
This year, the Gophers welcome a total of 12 newcomers to the roster, including Minnesota natives Will Anderson (left-handed pitcher), Trent Schoeberl (right-handed pitcher) and Bennett Theisen (right-handed pitcher). Transfers Drake Davis (right-handed pitcher), Ronald Sweeny (first baseman) and Jack Kelly (catcher/outfielder) also spent their high school days in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The new crop of Gophers also features three players from Mountain Vista High School in Colorado: right-handed pitcher/first baseman Sam Ireland, left-handed pitcher Jack Liffrig and infielder Drew Stahl. Liffrig also spent one season at the University of Utah before electing to bring his talents to Minneapolis.
Rounding out the cohort is former St. Francis (Ga.) infielder Kyle Bork, outfielder Steve Jamroziak of Muskego, Wis. and former Joliet Catholic (Ill.) right-handed pitcher Michael Gurka.
Ten of the aforementioned players received national rankings from either Perfect Game or Prep Baseball Report, while all 12 were ranked among the best at their position in their home state.
Last season, Minnesota claimed the top recruiting class in the Big Ten while being announced at no. 37 on Collegiate Baseball's list. Thus, the Maroon and Gold find themselves within the top-three in the Big Ten for the second consecutive season.
