Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short as Gophers Drop Game Three at Iowa, 5-4

4/5/2026 5:14:00 PM | Baseball

IOWA CITY, IA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team closed out their three game road weekend against the University of Iowa this afternoon, falling short of a ninth inning comeback to drop the series finale 5-4 to the Hawkeyes at Duane Banks Stadium.

Marcus Kruzan started and was credited with the loss on the mound for Minnesota. Tyler Hemmesch was a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 innings while striking out seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling to a 3-0 deficit, the Gophers first put runs on the board in the sixth inning on a solo home run over the center field wall off the bat of Easton Richter.

The Gophers deficit grew to 5-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth, pushing three runs across on a three run home run over the right field by Charlie Sutherland.

The ninth inning rally was cut short for the Gophers to end the afternoon, dropping the game 5-4 to close out the series.
