Ciarrocca Nominated for Broyles Award
11/13/2019 3:44:00 PM | Football
Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kirk Ciarrocca is one of 41 nominees for the Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Wednesday.
The 41 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 130 Division One programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
Ciarrocca has been leading the Gophers offense the past three years. He worked with head coach P.J. Fleck at Western Michigan. They also worked together when Fleck was the wide receivers coach at Rutgers.
The Gophers have put up historic offensive numbers in the 2019 season. Minnesota has scored at least 28 points in all nine games this season, which is something it had never done prior to this year. In 1904 - when the Gophers were competing against high school teams - Minnesota scored 28 or more points in their first eight games (107, 77, 75, 65, 47, 35, 32 and 146). Minnesota scored 16 points in its ninth game, which was a 16-12 win against Nebraska. Minnesota has scored 31 points or more in its last eight games. The Gophers have the No. 2 scoring offense (39.5) in the Big Ten.
Minnesota has thrown for 21 touchdowns this year after tossing 20 touchdowns last season. This is the first time since 2006 (22) and 2007 (25) that Minnesota had consecutive seasons with 20 passing touchdowns. Minnesota rushed for 23 touchdowns and threw for 20 touchdowns last year. This year, Minnesota has already rushed for 22 touchdowns and thrown for 21. This is the first time that Minnesota has consecutive 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdown seasons since 2005 (34 rush, 20 pass) and 2006 (25 rush, 22 pass) and would be only the second time ever since 1955.
Ciarrocca has also guided quarterback Tanner Morgan to high marks. Morgan is a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. Morgan has completed 131-of-193 passes (67.9%) for 2,100 yards and 21 touchdowns (also rushed for a score). Morgan ranks third in the nation in yards per attempt (10.88), fourth in yards per completion (16.03) and 16th in completion percentage (67.9%). He is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency at 191.10 and is tied for 18th with 21 passing touchdowns.
