MINNEAPOLIS – An opportunistic defense fueled a second-half comeback as RV/RV Minnesota (2-1) defeated Milwaukee (1-2) Thursday afternoon at Williams Arena, 77-61.
Trailing 33-31 at intermission, the Golden Gophers opened the first four minutes of the second half on a 13-0 run and never trailed the rest of the game. Minnesota outscored Milwaukee, 23-12, overall in the frame, and 15 of those 23 points came off of Panther turnovers, which were the story of the game.
The Golden Gophers forced the Panthers into 33 turnovers and converted them into 35 points. That tied for the 10th most turnovers forced in a game in program history and were the most since forcing North Dakota State into 35 turnovers on Nov. 24, 2009.
Conversely, Minnesota committed only 11 turnovers and Milwaukee was able to only capitalize with eight points off of them.
Free throws were also a big factor as Minnesota was 27-of-31 at the line, while the Panthers were just 6-of-11. Senior Taiye Bello made all eight of her attempts, while freshman Jasmine Powell made 8-of-9 shots from the charity stripe.
Five Gophers finished in double figures with Bello leading the way after her second straight double-double. She scored a game-high 18 points and recorded 11 rebounds for her 17th career double-double. She also contributed a career-high six blocks, which tied for the ninth most in a game in program history. It also bumped her career total to 88, moving past Carol Ann Shudlick (84) for 10th in school annals.
Coming off a 19-point performance Sunday against Vermont, Powell backed it up with 16 Thursday. She also had a game-high four assists. Junior Jasmine Brunson scored 11 points, while redshirt junior Gadiva Hubbard and freshman Sara Scalia each had 10. For Hubbard, seven of her 10 points came during that pivotal stretch to open the second half.
Notable
Minnesota blocked nine shots as a team, its most since swatting 11 shots against Army on Dec. 8, 2016.

"We knew if we stuck with it and turned up our intensity and pressure that it was going to break through for us. That's about it. I honestly don't really remember, but they responded. That's what I love about this team. They always respond, and they always come out and compete. We sure did that in the third quarter." – Head Coach Lindsay Whalen on what she said in the locker room at halftime
