Gophers Roll Past Beavers

Minnesota scored five second-period goals on the way to a 7-1 game-one win over Bemidji State.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers scored five second-period goals and Sarah Potomak led the way with four points as the No. 1 University of Minnesota women's hockey team rallied past Bemidji State for a 7-1 win at Ridder Arena on Friday night.

Minnesota (11-1-1, 7-1-1-1 WCHA) surrendered the first goal of the game in the final two minutes of the opening period, but the Maroon & Gold responded with seven unanswered goals, including a five-goal second period to take a 5-1 lead into the second intermission and two goals in the final stanza. Along with S. Potomak's four-point game (2g-2a), the Gophers received multiple points from Taylor Heise (1g-1a), Alex Woken (1g-1a), and Madeline Wethington (2a).

Bemidji State (3-7-1, 2-5-0-0 WCHA) got its lone goal from Mak Langei and 19 saves on 24 shots from Lauren Bench over the first two periods before Lexi Baker made 10 saves on 12 shots faced in the third. Minnesota outshot the Beavers, 36-16, and Sydney Scobee finished with 15 saves for the Gophers.

Quotable
"It was a strong game here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "The first period was pretty even; we turned the puck over too much and didn't take care of it, and Bemidji was able to capitalize on it. The difference was made in the second period where we scored five and then we put away the game in the third. Good job on the penalty kill tonight. Scobee did a good job, and the power play unit was clicking as well. We got a great three points, and we're looking forward to another one tomorrow."

Notable
Minnesota scored a season-high four power-play goals in the win, going four-for-five with the skater advantage. The Gophers last scored four power-play goals in game almost exactly four years ago, when they also went four-for-five on the power play in an 8-3 win over the Beavers on Nov. 14, 2015.

Up Next
The Gophers and Beavers meet in game two of this weekend's series at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
