The University of Minnesota Leadership U program welcomed Supreme Court member, Justice Margaret Chutich as the month of November's Speaker Series honorary guest. Governor Dayton appointed Justice Chutich to the Minnesota Court of Appeals in February 2012 and in March of 2016 she was appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court. She was elected for a six year term as justice in 2018 and is also the first openly gay member of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Her collegiate career began at Stanford where she tried out for the basketball team and became the starting point guard. After her first year, she transferred to the University of Minnesota where she pursued an undergraduate degree in history, as well as excelled as a Gopher tennis player. After Justice Chutich obtained her undergraduate degree and completed her career as a student-athlete, she continued her education at the University of Michigan Law School.
Justice Chutich began her legal career clerking for the Honorable Diana E. Murphy on the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. She then moved into private practice for five years, followed by serving in the Criminal Appellate Division of the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General, as well as serving as Deputy Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General in the Minnesota Attorney General's Office. Most recently, she worked as the Assistant Dean of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. In 2017, she received the Alumni of Notable Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts.
Student-athletes, coaches, staff and administration listened to Justice Chutich describe her leadership style in terms of her current role within the Minnesota Supreme Court as well as her previous experiences. The hour-long event started with Justice Chutich discussing her family's athletic history- dating back to 1923, the year her grandmother received a varsity letter from the University of Minnesota in field hockey. Chutich followed in her grandmother's footsteps as she attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Varsity letter in Tennis.
Leadership U consultant and former Gopher Swimmer, David Plummer, facilitated a question and answer session with Justice Chutich during the Speaker Series in which she described how her athletic career helped prepare her for her professional career, especially for a role where she is tasked with being a member of the rule-making body for all of the state's courts.
"Participating in sports has taught me I am capable of performing under stress and pressure and [has taught me] how to win graciously" Justice Chutich said.
Justice Chutich's definition of leadership consists of individuals being their authentic self, setting clear expectations, listening to others, and modeling good behavior. She explained that these characteristics along with the competence and ability to change ones mind, separate a good judge from a great one. Justice Chutich enjoys teaching and contributing to the development of her clerks and new lawyers. She also enjoys being a part of a team that creates law and ensuring that everyone who appears before the court is treated fairly and respectfully.
