MINNEAPOLIS -- Gophers alumna Meghan Lorence one of seven Minnesota alumnae playing for the Minnesota Whitecaps in the NWHL this season. Lorence caught up with GopherSports.com to share what it's like playing professional hockey and reflect on her experience playing for the Maroon & Gold.

Gopher Sports: What's it like playing for the Minnesota Whitecaps?

Meghan Lorence: I'm grateful to be a part of the Whitecaps. I remember when I was little and the Whitecaps were playing independently, I would always go watch their games and thought it was so cool. Now to be part of the team and give young girls the same opportunity to strive to play for the Whitecaps like I did is special. It has definitely been a positive experience.

GS: What was it like returning to competitive hockey after a few years away?

ML: It definitely took a few skates to get back into the swing of things and play competitively after being away for a couple years, but it feels great to be back! It's a lot like riding a bike, you can pick it back up pretty quickly!

GS: What was it like returning to Ridder and playing against your former team and coaches earlier this season?

ML: It always feels like home returning to Ridder, so it was definitely special.

GS: What is the most rewarding thing about playing in the NWHL?

ML: Seeing all the youth in the stands at all of our games is by far the most rewarding thing about playing in the NWHL.

GS: Where has life taken you since graduation?

ML: Life has taken me on all kinds of adventures since graduation. It's been great! I moved to Arizona for a year which I loved, but figured out that I was meant to be in Minnesota where all my family and friends are, so I moved back. I brought home from Arizona a labradoodle puppy named Diggs. I've been working for SportsEngine and helping coach for OS Hockey and the Minnesota Girls High School Elite Hockey League. I recently got engaged and bought a house with my fiance!

GS: How did college hockey help prepare you for life after college?

ML: Playing college hockey helped me prepare a ton for life after college, and I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff for this. They helped lay out the key aspects to be successful and had it embedded in the team culture that I have carried with me since.

GS: What is your favorite memory of your time as a Gopher?

ML: It's hard to pick just one favorite memory, so I have to say winning three national championships!

GS: What advice would you give your college self or the current Gophers?

ML: Enjoy every single day! It's hard to realize some days how good you actually have it during your college career because you can easily get stuck in the everyday grind of being a student-athlete. Enjoy it while you have it because you'll always remember your time as a Gopher!
