Gophers Selected for U.S. Training Camp

Ten current and former players and three staff members are among those attending the U.S. Women's Winter Training Camp in December.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Ten Gophers are among the 46 players who will participate in the 2019 USA Hockey Women's Winter Training Camp, which will take place Dec. 9-13 at XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, USA Hockey announced Thursday. Current Gophers Emily Brown, Taylor Heise, Madeline Wethington, and Grace Zumwinkle will join Minnesota alumnae Megan Bozek, Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Pannek, and Lee Stecklein at the camp.Â
Minnesota associate head coach Joel Johnson will serve as an assistant coach at the camp while Minnesota equipment manager Brent Proulx and Minnesota strength and conditioning coach Cal Dietz will also be on staff for the U.S. team.
The USA Hockey Women's Winter Training Camp is an annual training session designed to help the top players prepare for upcoming international events, including the 2019-20 Rivalry Series and 2020 IIHF Women's World Championship.
Of the 46 athletes invited to the training camp, 21 are active NCAA players, while 25 are postgraduates. The complete roster includes 24 forwards, 16 defense, and six goaltenders.Â
From the pool of players, 23 will be selected to the U.S. Women's National Team that will face Canada in the first two games of the 2019-20 Rivalry Series, including games on Dec. 14 in Hartford, Connecticut, and Dec. 17 in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Rivalry Series includes five games as the U.S. and Canada will also meet on Feb. 3 in Victoria, British Columbia; Feb. 5 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Feb. 8 in Anaheim, California. Tickets for all games are currently on sale.
