Pitts Named to Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota junior Destiny Pitts has been named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll as she led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, including 19 in the second half, as Minnesota rallied to defeat Montana State, 71-60, Saturday.
Pitts' 26 points upped her career total to 1,043, moving her from 24th on the Gophers' all-time scoring list to 20th. It was her 19th career game reaching 20 points as she made four 3-pointers and was 8-of-9 at the line. She also added four rebounds, a pair of steals and a blocked shot.
Down 47-35 in the third quarter, the Gophers started chipping away and outscored the Bobcats, 12-3, over the final 5:50 to trail by only three entering the final quarter. Pitts scored 10 of those points thanks to a couple 3-pointers and successful trips to the free throw line.
The Bobcats pushed the lead back up to five at 54-49 with 8:16 to go, but Minnesota responded with a 13-0 run and never looked back to take the first ever meeting between the schools.
After Minnesota regained the lead for the first time since the 7:16 mark of the second quarter, Montana State turned the ball over on three straight possession. Pitts turned those giveaways into five more points on a layup and a 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 60-54 lead.
The victory was the Gophers' biggest comeback since overcoming a 13-point deficit in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament against Green Bay.
For Pitts, this is the fifth time she has been named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll. She was recognized once as a freshman and three times last season.
Minnesota (4-1) returns to action Tuesday night against Bryant (1-4) in the final game of a six-game, season-opening homestand. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on BTN Plus.
