Minnesota's offense has thrived under offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca

University of Minnesota offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca was named one of the 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, which is presented to the best assistant coach in college football.

From the list of 15, five finalists will be selected and invited to travel to Little Rock, Ark., where the 2019 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 10 at the Marriott Hotel.

Ciarrocca's offense has scored 53 touchdowns (third most in modern era) and 395 points (third most in modern era) this year and is extremely balanced. Minnesota is one of only two schools in the nation (LSU is the other) with two 1,000-yard receivers (Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman) and one 1,000-yard rusher (Rodney Smith).

The Gophers average 35.9 points per game (395 points in 11 games), which is the most since 2003 (38.7 average) and the second highest in the modern era. Minnesota has averaged more than 30 points only five times since 1955.

Minnesota has thrown a school-record 26 touchdowns this year after tossing 20 in 2018. This is the first time since 2006 (22) and 2007 (25) that Minnesota has consecutive seasons with at least 20 passing touchdowns.

Minnesota rushed for 23 touchdowns and threw for 20 last year. This year, Minnesota has rushed for 24 touchdowns and thrown for 26. This is the first time that Minnesota has consecutive 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdown seasons since 2005 (34 rush, 20 pass) and 2006 (25 rush, 22 pass) and is only the second time ever since 1955.

Quarterback Tanner Morgan has thrived in Ciarrocca's offense as well. Morgan has thrown for 4,080 yards (9th in school history) in 20 games. He has completed 260-of-404 passes for 35 touchdowns (all have come in his 17 starts), which ranks sixth in school history. Morgan's career completion percentage of 64.3% currently places him first in school history ahead of Mark Carlson (57.2% from 1976-79). Morgan's career pass efficiency rating of 172.3 also currently ranks first in school history, well ahead of Bryan Cupito who had a pass efficiency rating of 138.34 from 2003-06

This year, Morgan set a school record with 26 touchdown passes and is the only Gopher ever to throw for a touchdown in the first 11 games of the season (Bryan Cupito school record is 12, but that spanned the 2005-06 seasons).
