MINNEAPOLIS – RV/RV Minnesota (5-1) scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back in a 101-56 win over Bryant (1-5) Tuesday night at Williams Arena.
Closing out their season-opening six-game homestand, Minnesota had four players in double figures and eight players with at least eight points. The victory was the 23rd 100-point game in program history and the first since a 101-68 victory over Penn State on Feb. 11, 2018.
Freshman Sara Scalia led all players with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers. She also matched a career high with seven rebounds and had a pair of steals.
All but two of redshirt junior Gadiva Hubbard's 18 points came in the first half, including 11 in the first quarter alone. She joined Scalia with eight made field goals, two of which were 3-pointers, and added two steals.
Senior Taiye Bello notched a double-double for the fourth time in six games this year with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also pitched in with three blocks and three steals.
Also reaching double figures was freshman Jasmine Powell, who tallied 14 points, and set career bests with seven assists and five steals.
The box score told the story of the Gophers' domination as they had 56 points in the paint and 54 points total in the second half, while the Bulldogs only had 56 points overall. Minnesota also forced Bryant into 26 turnovers and scored 45 points off of them. Meanwhile, the Gophers enjoyed a 21-to-8 assist-to-turnover ratio themselves.
In addition to points, the Gophers had the most field goals attempted (81) and steals (16) in the Lindsay Whalen era. The team's 41 field goals made were also the most under Whalen and tied for the eighth most in program annals.
The Golden Gophers came out red-hot from the beginning, opening the game on a 16-0 run over the first 6:19. The forced Bryant into eight turnovers during that run, and Hubbard had 11 of those 16 points.
Minnesota led 24-10 after the first quarter and used a 23-15 edge in the second quarter to take a 47-25 advantage into halftime. The 47 points were the most the team had score in any half until it was bettered with 54 points in the second half.
The lead grew to 72-37 through three quarters, while Minnesota had its largest lead of 55 points when senior Masha Adashchyk's layup gave the Gophers a 101-46 lead with 2:33 to go. Adashchyk's nine points in the game were the first nine points of her career, while fellow senior Kehinde Bello also recorded a career-high with her eight points.
Notable
The Gophers were 11-of-11 at the free throw line, tied for the second most makes without a miss in program history. The only better performance came in last year's Big Ten Tournament when they were a perfect 17-for-17 against Indiana.
