MINNEAPOLIS -- Gophers sophomore forward Abigail Boreen chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann last weekend.

Dan Hamann: Today I'm joined by Abigail Boreen, who is a sophomore from Somerset, Wis., who played her high school hockey at Hill-Murray. Still looking for that first goal of the season, but in game one against Minnesota Duluth, your hard work persevered and you set up a nice goal for your team yesterday. Describe how that play happened in the offensive zone.

Abigail Boreen: Emily Oden fore-checked, and the puck got caught up in her skates. I went through their defensive player and ended up in the corner, and I heard someone calling my name; I have no idea if it was Catie Skaja or Oden, but I flicked the puck out hoping someone would get a shot on net, and Emily ended up burying it. It was a good time.

DH: When the goals aren't coming as plentiful as you would hope, what do you do to make up for that?

AB: It's all about keeping up the hard work. I try to get pucks to the net when I can, make good plays, and be the best linemate I can be, whether it's cheering them on or giving them opportunities to score.

DH: What is your role on the line of yourself, Emily Oden, and Catie Skaja?

AB: We are supposed to play well defensively and attempt to get rushes on the offense, too. We want to be able to create goal chances. We're a great line, but we have the opportunity to step up in times of need, just like in Friday's game, to get the ball rolling. I think we click really well, and I'm excited for the remainder of the season.

DH: You guys played together frequently last year. How do you feed off the success of that this year?

AB: Last year, we were the fourth line, but continued to create goals and opportunities. I think it just carried over into this year. We played really well defensively, and we want to use that to create offensive chances. I think that's what we are looking to do this season.

DH: How was the adjustment of your role at Hill-Murray to the role you now serve on the team?

AB: Coming into college, it's a different game. You have to take your role and do it to the best of your ability, which is what I'm trying to do. I want to be a great teammate on the ice and off the ice and make sure I'm cheering people on.

DH: Why did you get started playing hockey?

AB: My dad was big into hockey, so I tried it for the first time at one of those Try Hockey for Free clinics at school. I fell in love with it when I suited up for the first time, and ever since then, it was my dream to play for the Gophers. It was surreal for that dream to come true.

DH: Your residence is actually in Wisconsin. And yet, you prefer Minnesota?

AB: Yeah, I'm a Minnesotan at heart. We had a house in the Twin Cities and then moved out to our lake home in Wisconsin full-time.

DH: What do you like to do in your off-time to get your mind off hockey?

AB: Now that it's winter, I like to go home and be with my family. When the snow falls, I like to snowmobile with my dad and create a hockey rink on the lake. I like to lace up and play with my sisters. Being with my family is what I love the most.

DH: What are the grinds of the season like, now that we're almost halfway through?

AB: It takes a lot and a special person to play. I love it so much, that even though it gets hard sometimes, you remind yourself of why you want to play. Even though there are days that you don't want to practice, you have to mentally flip the switch and remind yourself of why you're here. It transfers to school too, like we came here to play hockey, but we have to be able to succeed in school to play as well, so it's equally important.

DH: Have you zeroed in on a field of study?

AB: I want to go into pharmacy, but I have not selected a major yet.

DH: Keep working hard, because your efforts aren't unnoticed.

AB: I appreciate that. Thank you.
