Renner Nominated for Burlsworth Trophy
11/6/2019 2:14:00 PM | Football
Senior defensive lineman Sam Renner was one of 83 players nominated for the 2019 Burlsworth Trophy. In the award's tenth year, the trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman.Â
The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department. Renner's former roommate, NFL linebacker Blake Cashman, was a semifinalist for the trophy last year.Â
Renner battled injuries as a senior in high school after standing out as a fullback and tight end for Maple Grove. He redshirted in 2015 and did not see game action in 2016. Renner saw time on special teams in 2017 and earned a scholarship going into last season.Â
Now going for his Master's of Accountancy, Renner was named an Academic All-American last year. He has been a mainstay in the Gophers starting lineup as a senior this year. He has 27 tackles, three sacks and 3.5 TFLs this season with three pass breakups. He was named to the Pro Football Focus National Team of the Week for his efforts against Nebraska. He caused disruption throughout the game and ended with one sack, four tackles and two pass breakups.Â
