MINNEAPOLIS – Due to dominant showings at last week's Minnesota Invite, sophomores Joy Zhu and Max McHugh have garnered a pair of weekly Big Ten Conference honors, as announced Wednesday afternoon. Zhu received recognition as the Big Ten Diver of the Week, while McHugh was dubbed Swimmer of the Week yet again.

In her first season of NCAA competition, Zhu is already making a name for herself. At the highly competitive Minnesota Invite, Zhu swept first place in the one-meter and three-meter diving events, registering respective scores of 302.95 and 346.40.

Wednesday's accolade comes as Zhu's first-ever Big Ten award, although the Wuhan, China native has already turned in notable performances in the diving well this year. On Nov. 8, Zhu won both the one-meter and three-meter against Wisconsin to mark the first victories of her NCAA career.

As for McHugh, weekly Big Ten honors have now become a recurring theme. With this week's achievement, the sophomore All-American has now been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on three separate occasions this season (Oct. 30, Nov. 13). Although it is only December, McHugh has already tied former teammate Bowen Becker's mark from the 2018-19 season.

Last week, McHugh swam the nation's fastest time of the season in the 100 breast (50.74), while notching an NCAA "A" Cut and running away with first place in the event at the Minnesota Invite. McHugh made it two NCAA "A" Cuts when he completed a similar feat in the 200 breast (1:51.62) the very next day, while placing second and swimming the nation's second-fastest time of the year.

Overall, Minnesota has now been awarded with nine Big Ten weekly accolades during the present campaign. The Gophers have already out-performed their recognition from both 2016-17 and 2017-18 and look capable of besting last year's total of 15 weekly awards.
