Winfield named First Team, while Bateman named to the Third Team

University of Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr., and receiver Rashod Bateman were named AP All-America today. Winfield was named to the First Team, while Bateman was slotted on the Third Team.

This is the second All-American honor for the ball-hawking Winfield, as he was also named a First-Team All American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Winfield was also named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, All-Big Ten First Team and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is presented annually to the best defensive player in the nation.

Winfield leads Minnesota team with 83 tackles, which includes 58 solo stops. He also has 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks this year to go along with seven interceptions and two forced fumbles. Winfield's seven interceptions tied a school single-season record and also rank fourth in the NCAA this season.

Bateman was named the Big Ten Receiver of the Year and was one of 12 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award. He set program single-season record this year with 1,170 receiving yards and set a sophomore record with 11 receiving touchdowns. He has the top two Minnesota receiving games in TCF Bank Stadium history (2019 Penn State with 203 yards and 2019 Wisconsin with 147 yards).

Bateman, who is the first Minnesota receiver ever to be named an All-American, has played in 25 career games and has 108 catches (15th in school history) for 1,874 yards (eight in school history) and 17 touchdowns (tied for fifth in school history).

The last Gopher to be named All-America by the AP was tight end Maxx Williams, who was on the Second Team in 2014. The last to be named First Team was tight end Matt Spaeth in 2006.

Winfield, Bateman and the Gophers will face Auburn in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020, in Tampa, Fla. The game will mark Minnesota's first appearance in the Florida bowl.
