Winfield Named Consensus All-American

Safety is Minnesota's 34th Consensus All-American
University of Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. was named All-America First Team by the AFCA and The Sporting News.Â
Winfield has now been named All-America First Team by the AFCA, Associated Press, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation, making him a Consensus All-American. The FWAA All-America team is announced on Thursday and if Winfield is a First Team member then he would be a unanimous selection. He would join his father, Antoine Winfield, who was a unanimous selection at Ohio State in 1998.Â
Minnesota's last consensus and unanimous All-American was center Greg Eslinger in 2005. Winfield is Minnesota's 34th Consensus All-American and he has potential to be the seventh unanimous selection in school history. Minnesota previous unanimous selections were tackle Ed Widseth (1936), center Clayton Tonnemaker (1949), back Paul Giel (1953), guard Tom Brown (1960), tackle Bobby Bell (1962) and Eslinger (2005).Â
Winfield was also named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, All-Big Ten First Team and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is presented annually to the best defensive player in the nation. Â
Winfield leads Minnesota with 83 tackles, which includes 58 solo stops. He also has 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks this year to go along with seven interceptions and two forced fumbles. Winfield's seven interceptions tied a school single-season record and rank fourth in the NCAA this season.
Winfield and the Gophers will face Auburn in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020, in Tampa, Fla. The game will mark Minnesota's first appearance in the Florida bowl.
