MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota guard Sara Scalia has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for her career day against Bryant last week, the conference announced Monday.
Scalia led all players with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers, in a 101-56 win over Bryant Tuesday.
In addition to her point total, the Stillwater, Minn., native set career highs for field goals made and attempted, and 3-pointers made. She also matched personal bests for 3-pointers attempted, rebounds (7) and steals (2).
Seventeen of Scalia's 20 points came in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter alone as she made all four of her shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the period.
For the season, Scalia averages 9.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. She has made 10-of-20 3-pointers to lead the team in 3-point shooting percentage, sits second among Gophers with at least 15 field goal attempts with a .476 field goal percentage and is third in free throw percentage at .875 (7-of-8).
Since the Big Ten first started awarding Freshman of the Week honors during the 2009-10 season, Scalia is the ninth player from Minnesota to earn recognition. The last to do it was Destiny Pitts on Feb. 19, 2018, one of seven weekly honors she won that year.
Up next for Minnesota, it takes to the road for the first time this season Wednesday at Notre Dame in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The game tips off at 7 p.m. CT on ACC Network.
