Seven Gopher alums are spending the 2019-20 season playing for the Minnesota Whitecaps in the NWHL.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Seven University of Minnesota women's hockey alumnae are playing for the NWHL's Minnesota Whitecaps this season in Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal, Winny Brodt Brown, Sydney Baldwin, Kelsey Cline, Meghan Lorence, Nicole Schammel, and Amanda Leveille.Â
The Whitecaps are holding strong halfway through the 2019-20 season. The defending Isobel Cup Champions currently land second in the league standings with a record of 7-3-2 (win, loss, overtime loss) record. Schammel is second on the team with 14 points (7-g7a) in 12 games in her rookie season. Baldwin (5g-6a) and Lorence (5g-3a) rank fifth and seventh in scoring for the Whitecaps as well. Leveille is tied for second in the league with a .917 save percentage; her 2.48 goals against average is also second in the NWHL.Â
Whitecaps at Buffalo Beauts (Nov. 23-24)
The Whitecaps posted a split on the road against the Beauts. Minnesota won 5-3 win in game on led by three points from Schammel (2g-1a) and a two-goal game from Lorence. The pair received the first and second star of the game, respectively. The Whitecaps fell 4-3 in game two.Â
Whitecaps vs. Metropolitan Riveters (Dec. 14-15)
The Whitecaps returned to TRIA Rink after a six-game road trip, picking up a split with the Metropolitan Riveters earlier this month. Minnesota fell in a shootout in the first game but earned the split with a 5-2 win in game two. Schammel (1g), Baldwin (1g-1a), Brodt Brown (2a), and Brodt Rosenthal (1a) all recorded points during the two-game stint.Â
Whitecaps vs. Connecticut Whale (Dec. 21-22)
The Whitecaps closed out the 2019 portion of the 2019-20 season with a road sweep over the Connecticut Whale, winning 3-0 in game one and following up with a 2-1 win in game two. Leveille led the way, recording a 20-save shutout in game one before making 37 saves on 38 shots faced in game two. Lorence and Schammel picked up assists on the game-winner in game two as well.
The Whitecaps return to action with a series on the road against the Metropolitan Riveters on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5
