Five Minutes with Katie Robinson

Senior Katie Robinson chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann over the weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior Katie Robinson chatted with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann last weekend at the Country Classic. Listen as Robinson reflects on her Gophers career, her role on the team, her plans after graduation, and more.

Dan Hamann: Today I'm joined by senior Katie Robinson out of Kasson, Minn. Katie, it's not going to be long before you lace up your skates for the last time on the Maroon & Gold. When you look back at your years here, what's going to be your fondest memory of being part of this team?

Katie Robinson: I think it's going to be hanging out with the team. You get to be with your best friends every day, and when you graduate, you won't be with them anymore. Leaving the amazing support system and coaching staff will be hard.

DH: You've had quite a run here. This year, you were asked to move from a defensive position to a forward. What's been the hardest part for you concerning that change?

KR: I knew Madeline Wethington was coming in this year, and she's a very good defenseman, so I asked the coaches if I could possibly move to forward. They accepted and said yes. My senior year in high school, I also played forward, so it's going back to that now that I'm in my senior year here. It's a lot more tiring up at forward, so it's been a little bit of an adjustment.

DH: You volunteered to come up to forward. What's been the most difficult part of that change?

KR: I feel like I revert back to a defensive mindset a lot. Switching your mind to offensive mode is the most difficult.

DH: Your teammates think of you very fondly and speak highly of you. What do you want your teammates to remember you by?

KR: I want to be remembered as a good teammate and a good leader as a senior. I'd also like to be remembered as being one of the funny ones on the team (laughs).

DH: Do you tend to crack jokes?

KR: Mine's more of a 'sly comment' style of humor.

DH: That's the highest level of comedy right there. You have a great support system, including your parents. What was it like growing up and having that level of support?

KR: I don't remember a time where at least one of my parents wasn't at my games. They sacrifice sick days from work and spend hours driving just to see me play. It's incredible. It's been that way since I was young. My brother comes to some of my games when he can, as he's up in Bemidji, and my sister tries to make it as well.

DH: You grew up in Kasson, near Mankato. Growing up in a small town is different than living in a big city, because the community is usually so supportive, especially in youth sports.

KR: Growing up in Kasson was different, because I was the only one who played hockey in my grade. I had girls who played in grades above me, and our high school team had players from eight different schools. I think having people from all around the area was really special.

DH: Any thoughts on your future endeavors? You only have a couple months until you get to put on the cap and gown. What would you like to do in the future?

KR: I'll graduate with my degree in Supply Chain Management from the Carlson School of Business, so hopefully when I graduate, I'd like to go to Europe and play, or if not, find a job and find my way back to hockey somehow.

DH: Do you talk to your old teammates at all?

KR: Yeah, I do. We had a reunion during Sierra Smith's wedding over the summer, and that was really fun. We have Tianna Gunderson's wedding next summer, so it will be fun to see everyone again then, too.
